Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT IS BODY LINGUISTICS?
Body Linguistics is the effective application of nonverbal communication; and as such it is more of a science than an art. It is based on an integrated methodology which is systematic and quantifiable; and is relatively universal, objective and measurable.

WHY IS BODY LINGUISTICS SO IMPORTANT?
Based on the latest research (LMU ), people in general may be able to improve their effectiveness by up to 400%. For instance, students trained in Body Linguistics were observed to accelerate their effectiveness by up to 400% compared to those not so trained. This tool does not (as does some other modalities) seem to be restricted to just the talented, responsive or "creative types", or just to certain situations.

HOW POWERFUL IS BODY LINGUISTICS?
• In Life: nonverbal communication provides universal access to the "mountain" of the subconscious that is not typically available.
• In Business: If 80% of business is marketing & sales (communication), then 74% of your business may be nonverbal. If you were a Body Linguistics expert do you think you might as much as triple your business? How much of your business might go to the competition if your competition is expert and you are not?

I WANT TO "WORK SMARTER, NOT HARDER", BUT HOW?
Not only does this tool directly improve productivity by maximizing quality at minimum time and cost through minimum miscommunication, but also indirectly due to the extremely strong coupling between communication and creativity. Creativity, for example, maximizes quality and efficiency through creative problem solving.

HOW IS BODY LINGUISTICS DIFFERENT THAN BODY LANGUAGE?
Body Language has been around for many years; and it has been more of an art than a science, since it has typically depended on the perspective of the observer and consequently been somewhat qualitative and subjective. Body Language has been rapidly advanced by such sciences as Kinesics, and it has been more about knowledge than the effective application of that knowledge. Body Linguistics takes Body Language a quantum leap forward by answering the question "How can I make effective use of Body Language knowledge?"

"I ALREADY KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT BODY LANGUAGE. WHY DO I NEED BODY LINGUISTICS?"
It has been my experience that most of the people who have asked me this question think they are sufficiently expert until they absorb the information in the first session. Typically they find out that they: 1) are unaware of their own need for more adaptability and nonverbal communication knowledge in today's rapidly changing and competitive environment, 2) are unaware of their own knowledge relative to the latest research in the past 3 years or 3) even if they have the knowledge, they don't have the tools to apply that knowledge. You are welcome to contact me for a free evaluation, and you can find out for yourself if your expertise matches your need for Body Linguistics. When I went to a conference with the leaders in the field in March, 2002; even they were able to double a measure of their creativity in an afternoon with just one of the eight primary body languages.

HOW MUCH OF ALL COMMUNICATION IS NONVERBAL?
Most interpersonal communication, over 90%, is nonverbal (unwritten).

WHY IS THIS STATISTIC SO HARD TO BELIEVE?
There are probably several reasons. We may have become so convinced that it's what we say that counts, that we forget about our behavior while saying it. Society tends to reinforce the belief that what we say is more important than how we say it. As an example: if everyone believed that all communication were essentially nonverbal communication, educational institutions would most likely teach nonverbal communication at a higher priority than the existing verbal languages. In addition, there may be a "payoff" of "convenience" in not wanting to believe this statistic. Sometimes it may seem "easier" to communicate by email than in-person, for instance, when it is not justified.

WHY IS NONVERBAL CONFLICT RESOLUTION SO IMPORTANT?
How do you try to resolve conflicts? If you attempt to resolve conflicts verbally, is it because you are trying to avoid immediate discomfort and minimize stress? If you do, you may be magnifying instead of minimizing the conflict. Accurate nonverbal communication, although sometimes uncomfortable, not only resolves the conflict, but also minimizes the stress resulting from the unresolved conflict.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO CHECK INTUITION WITH BODY LINGUISTICS?
We are finding that the intuition can be substantially strengthened with such "reality checks". Sometimes intuition can be misinterpreted by any one of the many "intuition disguises" such as wishful thinking, fear versus concern, caring versus enabling,... The process of developing intuition attunement is analogous to going to the gym to strengthen the "intuition muscle." Not only does Body Linguistics indicate when intuition perception is accurate and when it isn't; but also this tool measures the direction and magnitude of this error.
